Unmarried fathers can acquire full parental responsibilities and rights if they:

  • Consent to being identified as the father
  • Contribute to the child’s upbringing and maintenance
  • Attempt in good faith to be involved in the child’s life

Disputes may arise regarding guardianship, contact, and inclusion on the birth certificate. These matters are governed by the Children’s Act and determined according to the child’s best interests.
